Launched in 2026, the ROI-NJ Family Business of the Year Awards honor New Jersey family-owned businesses for their economic impact, leadership and legacy. After receiving more than 200 nominations of family businesses across a range of industries, ROI-NJ’s editorial staff selected honorees through a scoring process based on longevity, family values, distinctive business strategies and community service.

Founder James E. Hanson established the company as James E. Hanson and Co. in 1955 and grew it into a prominent real estate development, investment and management firm with his sons, Peter O. Hanson, SIOR, Jon F. Hanson and Donald L. Hanson, who later split the business into three separately owned companies: NAI James E. Hanson, The Hampshire Companies and Roebling Investment Company. Today, Chairman Peter O. Hanson, SIOR, representing the second generation, and President William C. Hanson, SIOR, representing the third generation, lead NAI James E. Hanson.
